A tight knot in a delicate chain can happen quickly. The golden rule? Never pull the ends! Lay your necklace flat on a surface and open the clasp. To loosen the knot, use two safety pins (or needles) to gently separate the links. If the knot is stubborn, a drop of oil (olive or baby oil) will act as a lubricant. Your Maison de l'Amour stainless steel chains are very robust and won't break if you handle them gently.
1. The knot nightmare (and the golden rule)
You're ready to go, your outfit is perfect, all you need is your little golden choker... As you take it out of your jewelry box, you discover it's tangled in a tiny knot that seems impossible to undo.
The first reaction is often the worst: pulling from each side, hoping the knot "pops." By doing this, you only tighten the knot further, with the fatal risk of breaking the chain.
The golden rule: Lay the necklace flat on a well-lit table (never in your hands), and immediately unclip the lobster clasp to free the ends.
Patience and the right tools will save your favorite piece of jewelry.
2. The 3 foolproof tricks to untangle a knot
Forget your fingernails; they're often too thick to get between the fine links. Here are the real tricks to get rid of it.
Trick 1: The two-needle technique
This is the ultimate precision method. Take two safety pins, two sewing needles, or even two toothpicks. Insert the tips right into the center of the knot. Gently spread the two needles in opposite directions to "aerate" and loosen the knot from the inside, until you can get your fingers in.
Trick 2: The lubricant (Oil or Talc)
Is the knot stuck tight? You need to help it slide. Place a single drop of oil (baby oil or olive oil) directly on the knot. Gently massage the knot between your thumb and forefinger. The oil will reduce metal friction, and the chain will eventually slide open on its own. (Once untangled, simply rinse the chain with soapy water).
Trick 3: Window cleaner (The workshop secret)
If you don't have oil, spray a little window cleaner or multi-surface cleaner on the knot. These products contain foaming agents that act as a miraculous lubricant on metal, while also restoring its shine!
3. Why are your Maison de l'Amour jewels less likely to break?
If you've ever broken a chain trying to untangle it, it's probably because it was made of brass, zinc, or very fine silver (very soft and brittle metals).
At Maison de l'Amour, all our necklace chains are forged from stainless steel. In addition to not oxidizing in the shower, steel is one of the strongest metals in jewelry. Its links resist very high tension. If a knot forms, you'll be much less likely to break your jewelry by applying our tips!
4. How to prevent this from happening again?
To never lose 15 minutes in the morning again, adopt good storage habits:
- Always close your necklaces: Never store a necklace with the clasp open. This is the number one cause of knots.
- The pouch trick: Slide the chain into the Maison de l'Amour pouch, but always leave the clasp sticking out before pulling the drawstrings. It will never get tangled!
- When traveling: Thread your chain through a plastic or cardboard straw and close it. It's impossible for it to get tangled in your toiletry bag.
